Green Building
In 2003, DAHC partnered with the Center for Public Service at the University of North Texas (UNT) to develop and present a series of training workshops on energy efficiency and alternative “green” building methods. DAHC was successful in obtaining a Capacity Building Grant from the Texas Housing Trust Fund to hire a “Housing Educator” who has collaborated with the professional staff at UNT to develop and present the workshops. “Green or sustainable building” meets the following criteria:
- Makes appropriate use of land.
- Uses water, energy, lumber and other resources efficiently.
- Enhances human health.
- Strengthens local economies and communities.
- Conserves plants, animals and natural habitats.
- Protects agricultural, cultural and archaeological resources.
- Is nice to live in.
- Is economical to build and operate.
Economic Impact
Through its development activities, DAHC infused over $5 million into the local economy in 2003. Each home developed by DAHC had a positive economic impact on many of the following trades and businesses: building contractors, building material suppliers, framers, plumbers, electricians, concrete companies, painters, brick masons, flooring companies, roofers, cabinet makers, sheetrock installers, HVAC companies, cleaning companies, household appliance dealers, lawn maintenance companies, tree service companies and termite and pest control companies. In addition to the economic impact on those entities involved in the physical building side of development, many other businesses benefit from the purchase and sale of real estate, including mortgage lenders, surveyors, appraisers, title companies, insurers and occasionally realtors.
Ties to the Community
The agency, as well as individual staff members, actively participate in affordable housing endeavors throughout the community. DAHC is a member of the Denton Housing Coalition, networking with other organizations, both public and private, to work toward common goals. The agency belongs to the Texas Association of Community Development Corporations (TACDC), and the National Association of Housing and Community Development Officials (NAHRO) at the national level. These organizations help DAHC stay abreast of legislative issues that affect affordable housing. DAHC is an active member of the Denton County Homeless Coalition (DCHC). DAHC participates in the Cinco de Mayo activities in order to inform the public of its programs. The agency is a member of the Dallas Apartment Association as well as the Denton affiliate of that organization.
Project Self-Sufficiency
Collaborating with other local nonprofit organizations, including HOPE, Inc., Denton County Friends of the Family and Cumberland Children’s Home, and with the assistance of Vista Volunteers through the University of North Texas, DAHC established a Self-Sufficiency program for families transitioning from homelessness to self-reliance. Over and above the case management provided by each agency, the program provides access to services and guidance desperately needed by the participating families. Seminars on parenting, budgeting, preparation for employment, and various life-skills are offered. A parallel program is offered for the children while mothers participate in these evening classes.
